Our main film for April will be BlacKkKlansman...

Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes, BlacKkKlansman comes garlanded with awards and nominations from the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes and the Oscars (6 nominations). Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, it tells the story of black police officer Ron Stallworth (Denzel's son, John David Washington) who infiltrated the KKK in the early 1970s. While Stallworth builds up a rapport over the phone, his Jewish colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) goes undercover to head off a threatened Klan attack.  BlacKkKlansman satirises the racism of the period whilst reflecting today’s politics - as the grand wizard tries to move the KKK into politics with ‘America First’ banners.

While it deals with the most serious of subject matter, the genius of BlacKkKlansman is to do so with both gravity and absurdist humour - all set against perfect period detail. There's polemic here, but there is also satire and a gripping, hard-boiled crime drama. It’s the way these shifts in tone are handled that have won plaudits for direction for Spike Lee - who remains a powerful voice thirty years on from seminal 1980s films like She’s Gotta Have it and Do The Right Thing.

'Given the current political climate, and the high racial tensions in society, you have to laugh at the outrageous humor to keep yourself from crying at the extreme racism in this film. BlacKKKlansman was entertaining, insightful and ever so timely.' Emmanuel Noisette, The Movie Blog

'There are very few films that have enough guts to break the barrier of the politically correct and show the truth as it is.' David Ocadiz, Cinergetica

Tickets cost £4 for adults and £2 for under 18s, and are available online now or in advance from Watts Trading or on the door if not already sold out.
