Twinning Association is looking for new members

Wednesday 7th May 2014

Lostwithiel is twinned with a similar group in Pleyber Christ, a small town about 45 minutes from Roscoff in Brittany. It is a friendly and welcoming group which started more than 30 years ago with a mix of age groups, but families with small children were a large and important part.

New members needed!

Now the original children have grown and flown the nest and the group needs some young blood again. We are looking for new members, with or without children, of any age. Our friends in Pleyber are still a very mixed age group and the families with children would love to host similar. You don't have to speak any French (although we would be happy to teach some phrases) as most of the younger ones speak a lot of English. Some of the older English members who have been hosting for years hav only a few French words and their partner families have only a few English words - there are a lot of very funny conversations!

What goes on?

Each year there are 4 or 5 social occasions in and around Lostwithiel (boules, quizzes, picnics, wine tasting, car treasure hunts, safari suppers, Christmas meals etc.) - not compulsory but good fund and necessary to subsidise the exchange trips. These are usually 3 or 5 days including a weekend - coat to Plymouth, ferry to Roscoff, picked up by hosts. Events, visits and meals are planned for each day before the return journey. We don't normally know anything about the programme of entertainment before we arrive - this is all part of the fun.

Visits take place on alternate years - Cornwall/Brittany, Brittany/Cornwall. This year the Lostwithiel group are going to Brittany in September. These are very inexpensive trips and enormous fun - kids and adults alike have a really good time.

Friendships between host families have been made which have lasted for many years and have included wedding and special occasion invitations - and often holidays spent with each other. There is a small annual subscription with an all-in reduced family fee.

Why not ask friends to join with you?

Give you children an experience of France they wouldn't get in a gite or caravan. It is really very special to stay in the homes of our Breton friends - so much more interesting and rewarding than being a normal tourist. Find the real spirit of Brittany!
